Citico Creek

Citico Creek is the sister to the Tellico River it seems , but without the big drops the Tellico offers. There are two sections one above DoubleCamp Creek, and another sections is below DoubleCamp, the Upper Section is the more intense section. Kayaking and camping can be a lot of fun in this area.

Directions:

To find Citico Creek , it seems is the hardest part.

From Tellico Plains:

Drive up the Cherohala Skyway, drive past the Tellico. Keep driving up the skyway. Leaving the Tellico you will come to a fork intersection. Going right will have you going to Robbinsville, and up the skyway. You will turn left here. This will take you to Indian Boundary. Make a note of that.

At the entrance of Indian Boundary.

You will go right.

You will go over the ridge and drop into the Citico Creek gorge.

Put in: Upper Section

Look for a low water bridge crossing on the forest service road that parallels the creek.

Take-out : Lower Section

Doublecamp Campground.

Put-in :Lower Section

Doublecamp Camprground.

Take-out Lower Section:

Pull offs on the Forest Service Road

Overall:

The water is extremely clean, runs more then you think and is somewhat off the radar of most paddlers. Most who paddle it always come back for more. It has a road beside, easy shuttle once you are there, and its a read and run whitewater creek. Until you get to Pigs in Space. If you run the Little in the Smokies and the Tellico this is another one for your gun belt.

The first two miles are the best part with the most action and bang for the buck.If you bite off more than you can chew the road is right beside you..

Top Section:

Boogie boating until you reach Pigs in Space.

Pigs in Space.

Named by the G.D.I. canoe club, its a name you will remember . The rapid is straight forward, scout it on your first trip on the road. The trick is to run it on river left, until you come to the drop. From there, run it on the left side and land your kayak or canoe into the eddy below on river left. This eddy is a good place to pick your whitewater gear for a first timer trip.

     Below DoubleCamp: The Lower Section

About a 1/2 mile below the camp you get some action, its some ledges, with a 10 foot cascade waterfall. Use the bridge for your landmark for this drop.

***Warning label***

Whitewater paddling is VERY Dangerous, and you should get instruction before ever attempting even to paddle flatwater. Whitewater paddling can ruin your life through accidents and can effect your family and friends throughout a lifetime.

The information on this page is incomplete, inaccurate, and very unreliable.   Use with caution.  Whitewater paddling is a dangerous sport and the information here is not a substitute for actual knowledge and skill.  The authors are not liable for your actions. Go ahead and kill yourself if you want to, but don't blame others for you actions and decisions that you will make on and off the river.
